Description

Your leisurely-paced 2.5-3-hour walking tour which spans the entire 1.45 mile (2.33 kilometer) High Line begins with a walk through the treasured Chelsea Market, located in the heart of the fashionable Meatpacking District. This fabulous culinary and shopping marketplace was once the home of Nabisco, world’s largest bakery and creator of the Oreo Cookie. Whilst here your guide will share the story of the former bakery, as well as other neighborhood buildings. You’ll learn how the Meatpacking District, once a flurry of industry, ultimately fell into ruin becoming a dilapidated, drug-ridden, urban wasteland. Your guide will share the area's remarkable history and transformation from a once seedy area to the chic and glamorous hot-spot that it is today. The High Line itself is a linear 1.45-mile aerial greenway which rests upon the former historic freight rail line of the New York Central Railroad. The transformation of the disused rail elevated above the busy streets of Manhattan's West Side was inspired by Paris' Promenade Plantee. Today, High Line Park, a 'Park-in-the-Sky', has become one of NYC's most cherished and visited destinations. Additionally, this tour takes you to a relatively new and fabulous 2.4 acre park, called Little Island Park. This beautiful little park boasts a unique shape and wonderful views as its sits out over the Hudson River on NYC's west side. It is yet another special, 'must-see' spot. Throughout your fun and comprehensive tour through all of the areas visited, your professional, licensed Guide will share their extensive knowledge of the High Line and the neighborhoods it traverses, citing its fascinating history to its intriguing future, embraced on all sides by new, cutting-edge architecture created by renowned architects Bring a smile, a cheerful attitude and your camera and get ready to explore and fall in love the magnificent High Line park; surely 6 million visitors annually can't be wrong!
